The Skinny On The Most Common Skin Diseases

Understanding Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is a common skin disorder that occurs when there is an overproduction of melanin in skin cells. Melanin is responsible for determining the color of our skin, and any damage to these cells can lead to changes in skin pigmentation. Although hyperpigmentation is more prevalent in older adults, it can affect individuals of all ages. The condition is not contagious and typically manifests as dark patches on the skin, commonly referred to as liver or age spots. Various factors can contribute to the development of hyperpigmentation, including excessive sun exposure, skin injuries, or underlying skin diseases that have caused damage to the skin.

Erythema Nodosum

Erythema Nodosum is a dermatological condition characterized by the presence of painful, red nodules located below the knee and on the front of the leg. This skin disease can be linked to various factors, including Crohn’s Disease, pregnancy, cat scratch disease, or the use of certain medications like birth control. The treatment for Erythema Nodosum typically involves the administration of anti-inflammatory drugs and cortisone, as well as addressing the underlying health issue causing the condition. Fortunately, the nodules tend to diminish within a few weeks and do not result in permanent scarring.
