The Somatic Nervous System, Movement, and Reflexes

Other Reflexes

Aside from controlling the stretch reflex, the somatic nervous system also governs various other reflexes. Among these is the cornea reflex, also known as the blink reflex. Whenever an object or substance makes contact with the cornea, the eye instinctively blinks in response. These reflexes play a crucial role in assessing nerve function during physical examinations. For instance, medical professionals employ methods like directing a gentle puff of air towards the cornea or lightly touching it with a cotton swab to ensure that the blink reflex remains intact.

Understanding Peripheral Nerve Disorders

Peripheral nerve disorders can occur due to various factors such as hereditary conditions, injuries, infections, exposure to toxins, or metabolic disorders. These conditions can disrupt the normal functioning of the cranial or spinal nerves. Some of the common peripheral nerve disorders include muscular dystrophy, myasthenia gravis, diabetes mellitus, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, and lipid storage diseases.
