The Squatty Potty and Toilet Posture

Throughout history, finding the ideal posture for effective bowel movements has been an ongoing concern. The debate between sitting and squatting has divided opinions. However, innovative toilet stools, such as the Squatty Potty, have emerged, promising to enhance the experience by facilitating a more natural defecating position and ensuring the rectal canal is fully open.

Sitting versus Squatting: Which is the Best Position for Defecation?

The position we adopt while using the toilet can greatly impact the ease of defecation. In the Western hemisphere, the sitting posture is the most commonly used position. However, some experts argue that this position is unnatural and may contribute to the development of irritable bowel syndrome and chronic constipation. On the other hand, advocates of products like the Squatty Potty argue that squatting is actually the most optimal position for bowel movements.

The Optimal Angle

There has been a lot of debate surrounding the best position for defecation. Critics of sitting argue that the shape of the rectal canal is not ideal for this posture. When sitting, the rectal canal angle is approximately 100 degrees. However, a study conducted in Japan discovered that by flexing the hips and elevating the legs, the angle of the rectal canal increases to about 120 degrees. Not only does this change in posture reduce abdominal pressure, but it also lessens the strain experienced during defecation. These findings suggest that squatting or using a tool that allows for a similar position can make the process of defecation a little bit easier.
