The Stages of a Cold Sore

Stage One: Initial Tingling

Cold sores progress through multiple stages, starting with an initial tingling sensation that precedes any visible signs. Individuals may experience itchiness or a burning sensation around the mouth or nose, indicating the development of a cold sore. These symptoms typically manifest 24 hours before the appearance of fluid-filled blisters.

Stage Two: Appearance of Blisters

During the second stage, blisters become noticeable on the face. These blisters are filled with clear fluid and typically emerge around the lips and inside the mouth. It is important to note that these blisters are distinct from canker sores. At this point, the sores become more contagious, necessitating individuals with visible blisters to refrain from touching their faces and to frequently wash their hands with soap. In some cases, individuals may experience symptoms such as a headache or sore throat, particularly during their initial outbreak.
