Relieving Ear Pressure with a Hot Compress
When the Eustachian tubes, which connect the middle ear to a cavity just behind the nose, become obstructed by water, a hot compress can offer much-needed relief. To create a hot compress, start by soaking a washcloth in warm water and then gently squeeze out most of the excess liquid. Next, apply the warm cloth to the affected ear and allow it to remain in place for approximately 30 seconds. Repeat this process five to six times. Following the hot compress treatment, it is recommended to either sit up or lay down on the opposite side of the affected ear. This position helps facilitate the drainage of any remaining water from the ear, further alleviating discomfort.
Relieving Trapped Water in the Ears
Whether it’s due to swimming, showering, or other water-related activities, having water trapped in the eustachian tubes can be uncomfortable. However, there are simple techniques that can help alleviate this issue. One effective method is to either yawn or chew gum to reduce the tension in the eustachian tubes. Yawning is particularly effective, but if that doesn’t work, chewing gum can also provide relief. Additionally, tilting your head to the side after yawning or chewing gum can help facilitate the flow of water out of your ear canal, providing further relief.
