Understanding Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration (MCHC)

The mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, also known as MCHC, is a measurement of the hemoglobin concentration in a given sample of red blood cells (RBCs). By dividing the hemoglobin by the hematocrit, you can calculate the MCHC. This reading is essential in determining the type of anemia one is experiencing and can also indicate other underlying conditions, particularly if the MCHC level is higher than the normal range. In a healthy individual, the reference range for MCHC is typically between 32 to 36 g/dL. Any value above or below this range requires further medical investigation.
