Top 10 Most Common Allergens

Insect Stings and Bites

When it comes to insect stings and bites, it’s important to be aware of the potential allergic reactions they can trigger, especially in the case of bees, wasps, hornets, and fire ants. For some individuals, these allergic reactions can be dangerous. Unlike common allergens like peanuts that are consumed, being stung by an insect is less common, which means people with this allergy may not even know they have it until they experience a reaction.

Typically, mild reactions to insect stings or bites include localized pain, redness, swelling, itching, warmth, and the appearance of pimple-like spots. However, in more severe cases, a reaction known as anaphylaxis can occur. Anaphylaxis symptoms can range from difficulty breathing, hives, dizziness, and nausea to diarrhea and swelling of the face, throat, mouth, or tongue.

Understanding Medication Allergies

Medication allergies, also known as drug allergies, occur when the body’s immune system mistakenly identifies a medication as a harmful substance like a virus or bacteria. As a result, the immune system initiates an immune response to fight off the perceived threat. This allergic reaction can occur either upon initial exposure to the medication or after repeated use.

Among the various types of drug allergies, some of the most common ones are related to antibiotics, ibuprofen, aspirin, insulin, anti-seizure medications, and intravenous muscle relaxers.
