Toxic Positivity: When Being Positive Is a Problem

The Drawbacks of Insisting on Positivity

While maintaining a positive outlook can have its advantages when facing challenges, there are drawbacks to feeling pressured to adopt an artificially cheerful demeanor. Often, this pressure only serves to exacerbate negative feelings about one’s situation. Well-intentioned phrases such as “look on the bright side” and “everything happens for a reason” can actually deepen the emotional pain experienced by someone, as they begin to question the validity of their own emotions. Moreover, the burden of changing their behavior is placed solely on the individual, while the person offering the advice may receive accolades for their supposedly helpful words, thereby boosting their social status.

Understanding the Prevalence of Toxic Positivity

Why is toxic positivity so pervasive? Negative emotions can be challenging to confront and deal with. As humans, we are naturally inclined towards seeking positivity rather than dwelling on negativity. This preference for “good vibes only” has led to the thriving popularity of such messages on social media platforms.

Research has indicated that individuals tend to experience a surge in dopamine receptors in their brains when they receive positive feedback on their social media posts. This feel-good response fuels the desire for more positive interactions. Consequently, toxic positivity may be more beneficial for the person sharing it rather than for their intended audience.
