Treating Shoulder Subluxation

Closed Reduction: Restoring the Arm Bone to its Proper Position

Shoulder subluxation, a condition where the arm bone partially dislocates, can be treated through a medical procedure known as closed reduction. During this procedure, a doctor uses various techniques to manipulate the arm bone back into its socket. In some cases, painkillers or anesthesia may be administered, while in others, these may not be necessary.

During closed reduction, the doctor carefully rotates the arm until it securely fits back into the socket. This process may require patience and precision to ensure the bone is properly aligned. Once the procedure is complete, the patient will typically be advised to wear a sling for several weeks and give their shoulder ample rest to allow for proper healing.

Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation

After undergoing a closed reduction for shoulder subluxation, it is common for individuals to require several weeks of physical therapy in order to promote proper healing and alleviate any pain that may be experienced during movement. Physical therapists employ various techniques during the rehabilitation process, such as therapeutic massage, strengthening exercises, and the use of ultrasound. In instances where the condition is more severe, doctors may advise a lengthier period of several months dedicated to physical therapy.
