Types of Suppositories and Their Uses

Drawbacks of Suppositories

Despite their numerous advantages, suppositories also come with inherent disadvantages. Self-administering rectal suppositories can be inconvenient and challenging. Vaginal administration can be unpredictable due to the varying permeability and pH levels of the area. Additionally, many individuals find all types of suppositories uncomfortable, and there can be problems with drug leakage.

Shapes of Suppositories

Suppositories come in various shapes depending on their intended use. Rectal suppositories are designed with a tapered end to facilitate easier insertion. On the other hand, vaginal suppositories exhibit more variability and can be found in globular, oviform, or cone shapes. A study conducted in 1991 suggested that suppositories shaped like torpedoes enhance the internal travel of medication and improve its effectiveness. However, numerous researchers have since questioned the validity of this study, citing a lack of sufficient evidence to substantiate its claims.
