Understand the Symptoms, Causes, and Treatments of Bilharzia

Where is Bilharzia Most Prevalent?

Bilharzia, also known as schistosomiasis, is a widespread parasitic disease affecting millions of individuals globally. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is the second most common parasitic disease in the world, surpassed only by malaria. The prevalence of Bilharzia is particularly high in tropical and subtropical regions. Various countries and regions where the disease is most commonly found include Brazil, Venezuela, the Nile River Valley in Sudan and Egypt, parts of North Africa, Indonesia, Laos, Cambodia, and several other Southeast Asian countries. Although Bilharzia can affect individuals of all ages, it predominantly impacts children who are exposed to contaminated water sources.

Prevention

Preventing the contraction of this illness primarily involves avoiding contact with contaminated water that may contain parasites. Certain regions where bilharzia is prevalent have implemented initiatives to eliminate the snails responsible for releasing these worms into the water. In some cases, crayfish are being introduced into the water to help regulate snail populations. Furthermore, research centers are actively working on developing a vaccine that can effectively inhibit the parasite from maturing in the body and causing harm.
