Label Regulations and Certification
When it comes to label regulations, the USDA primarily focuses on the “organic” label. However, the department’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) offers farmers and businesses the opportunity to obtain the USDA Grade Shield on their products. This shield serves as an indication that the AMS has verified the authenticity of the farm’s claims. For instance, eggs labeled as “cage-free” with the USDA Grade Shield are guaranteed to come from a farm that provides cage-free hen housing.
In addition to the USDA’s regulations, there are several independent, non-profit organizations that inspect and certify businesses and farms. These organizations play a crucial role in ensuring the credibility and transparency of labeling claims. A couple of the most reputable certifying bodies include A Greener World’s Certified Animal Welfare Approved and Humane Farm Animal Care’s Certified Humane. Products that bear these organizations’ certifying labels have undergone inspections and met the standards set for cage-free, free-range, and pasture-raised farming practices.
Deciphering Animal Product Labels
Deciphering the various labels on animal products can be a challenge due to the lack of regulation and oversight. Different terms like “pasture-raised” and “cage-free” can have conflicting meanings, and some labels are intentionally deceptive. To make an informed choice, it is important to look beyond the label. The USDA and independent certifying organizations offer valuable resources on labeling standards and provide a list of products that meet these standards.
