Understanding Both Sides of the GMO Foods Discussion

Enhanced Food Production

GMO food crops have been developed with the objective of disease resistance and herbicide tolerance. Over time, their characteristics have evolved to include drought-tolerance and resistance to browning. Although there is controversy surrounding the impact of GMOs on crop yields, it is worth noting that these genetically modified crops significantly reduce losses caused by pests and diseases. As a result, farmers are able to harvest a greater portion of their crops, indirectly contributing to an approximate 20 percent increase in food yields and subsequent profits.

GMO Industry Dominance

While there are several companies operating in the GMO industry, Monsanto is often the first name that comes to mind. This particular company exerts a considerable influence over farmers in numerous countries. They hold a monopoly on the seeds of essential crops that are crucial in specific regions. As a result of this control, farmers’ lives and livelihoods are effectively dictated by Monsanto. This high level of dependency raises concerns among various organizations, not only regarding the impact on farmers but also the potential harm to plant diversity and sustainability.
