Understanding Your Six Month Old Infant’s Development

Movement

By the time your baby reaches six months of age, you’ll notice an increase in their movement abilities. They will be more active, kicking and wiggling their arms and legs with greater enthusiasm. At this stage, some babies may even start rocking on their stomachs, and a few might even be able to roll over. As their muscles continue to develop, their head control will improve significantly. It is common for six-month-olds to be able to lift their heads while lying on their tummy and some may be able to bear weight on their legs. Another significant milestone at this age is the ability to sit on their own. Additionally, their hand-eye coordination will be improving, allowing them to grasp fingers or pick up soft toys.

Physical Development

Developmental milestones can vary among babies, making it difficult to set specific expectations for a six-month-old. However, on average, most infants double their birth weight by this age. Additionally, they typically experience a monthly growth of about half an inch to an inch in height. Interestingly, their head also continues to grow at a rate of about half an inch per month.

In general, parents need not worry about their child’s height and weight unless they notice sudden weight loss or a halt in growth. Should these concerns arise, it is recommended to seek guidance from a pediatrician for expert advice and nutritional counseling.
