One Year
During the one-year check-up, the physician will once again evaluate the child’s growth and development. Apart from the obvious physical growth and weight gain, the child should have achieved several crucial developmental milestones by this point. This includes displaying signs of shyness or nervousness around unfamiliar individuals, handing you a book to indicate their desire for you to read to them, following basic one-step instructions, uttering simple words, and employing uncomplicated gestures. Additionally, they should be capable of solving simple problems, such as finding a concealed toy. It is common for children at this age to have started walking, either by holding onto furniture for support or taking independent steps.
Developmental Milestones at Eighteen Months
By the time a child reaches eighteen months, the frequency of visits to the pediatrician starts to decrease, although some healthcare professionals may still recommend a visit at fifteen months. During this visit, the doctor will assess the child’s growth and development, focusing on various milestones. These milestones include the ability to follow simple one-step commands, undress with assistance, scribble or make marks on paper, point to named body parts, walk independently, and use a spoon and cup for feeding. Additionally, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) suggests that a routine autism screening be conducted during this visit to ensure early detection and intervention if necessary.
