What Are Hypnic Jerks and How Can They Affect Sleep?

Who is Most at Risk?

Hypnic jerks, also known as sleep starts, can affect anyone regardless of gender or age. However, certain factors can increase the risk of experiencing these involuntary muscle twitches. Mental or physical stress, excessive consumption of caffeine or other stimulants, and engaging in exercise too close to bedtime are some of the factors that can contribute to the occurrence of hypnic jerks. Additionally, fatigue and irregular or poor sleep habits can also make one more susceptible to these sleep disturbances.

Research suggests that hypnic jerks may be more common in individuals with Parkinson’s disease, although further studies are needed to better understand this relationship. Furthermore, people who suffer from migraines and children with neurological disorders are also more likely to experience hypnic jerks on a regular basis.

Diagnosis

When it comes to diagnosing hypnic jerks, healthcare professionals typically rely on a combination of patient history and physical examination. However, in order to eliminate any potential medical causes such as seizures, movement disorders, and other sleep disorders, doctors may recommend additional tests. One such test is an EEG (electroencephalogram), which evaluates brain waves and electrical activity in the brain.
