What Are Night Terrors?

Other Parasomnias

There are several other parasomnias that share similarities with night terrors. Two of the most commonly associated with night terrors are confusional arousals and sleepwalking.

Confusional arousals occur when an individual wakes up from sleep but remains confused for a period of time. This is a relatively common experience among children and is generally not considered dangerous.

Sleepwalking, despite its name, involves more than just walking while asleep. It can also involve talking, moving objects, or performing other actions while in a sleep state. It is not uncommon for individuals who experience night terrors to also exhibit sleepwalking behaviors.

Sleep Paralysis

Sleep paralysis is a phenomenon that occurs when a person is either falling asleep or waking up from sleep. During this state, individuals may find themselves fully conscious and aware of their surroundings, yet unable to move or speak. It is not uncommon for those experiencing sleep paralysis to also encounter vivid hallucinations, often in the form of demons or other menacing creatures. Additionally, they may feel an intense pressure or weight on their chest, which can be distressing. Even if individuals are aware that they are going through sleep paralysis, it is still common for them to feel overwhelming fear. In some cases, distinguishing between night terrors and sleep paralysis can be challenging for experts, as certain symptoms overlap.
