What Are Plicae?

What is Elbow Synovial Fold Syndrome?

Elbow Synovial Fold Syndrome is a condition that is not extensively researched. Similar to plica syndrome in the knee, it is commonly caused by damage or repetitive injury to the synovial plicae in the elbow joint. When a person with this syndrome extends their arm to a specific position, the elbow may lock, leading to severe pain. The recommended treatment for Elbow Synovial Fold Syndrome usually involves rest, the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and physical therapy.

Diagnosis Methods for Plica Issues

There are several diagnostic methods that physicians use to identify problems with the plicae. One common approach is to utilize magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to examine the synovial folds in the elbow. By conducting MRI scans, doctors can not only assess the condition of the plicae but also exclude any other related conditions, ensuring an accurate diagnosis of plica syndrome or other plica issues. In certain cases, however, additional plica provocation tests may be necessary for a more conclusive evaluation.
