What Are Pseudotumors?

Birth Defects and Pseudotumors

Birth defects can contribute to the development of pseudotumors, particularly when they involve the narrowing of blood vessels in the brain. When the blood vessels become narrow, it becomes challenging for excessive cerebrospinal fluid to be absorbed into the bloodstream and removed from the brain. Consequently, the fluid accumulates and causes increased pressure inside the skull.

Factors that Increase the Likelihood of Pseudotumor Development

Pseudotumors can affect individuals of all genders and ages. However, statistics indicate that they are more prevalent in women aged between 20 and 50 years old, particularly those who are overweight or obese. This correlation suggests a potential link between obesity and the development of pseudotumors. Additionally, individuals with certain chronic conditions such as Addison’s disease, Lupus, and blood clotting disorders are also at a higher risk of developing pseudotumors.
