What Are the Stages of COPD?

Strategies for Managing Stage 4C and Stage 4D COPD

When it comes to managing stage 4 COPD, the strategies employed are similar to those used for stage 3 COPD. The primary aim is to maintain an active lifestyle with the guidance of a healthcare professional. In order to alleviate symptoms, doctors may prescribe bronchodilators or steroid inhalers. In more severe cases, lung volume reduction surgery may be necessary to remove damaged lung tissue. Alternatively, some individuals may require lung transplants to improve their condition.

Additional Stages of COPD

To account for the variability of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), some organizations adopt a broader approach in grading the condition. This expanded classification system recognizes the diverse nature of COPD and includes two additional stages: stage 0 and stage U.

Stage 0 is characterized by normal spirometry results, indicating no airflow limitation. However, individuals in this stage still face the possibility of developing complications associated with COPD.

On the other hand, stage U denotes undefined COPD. Individuals in this stage do not fully meet the diagnostic criteria for COPD, but their symptoms and Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second (FEV1) values align with the characteristics of the disease.
