What Causes a Yellow Tongue?

Jaundice in Babies and Children

Jaundice is a condition that can also affect babies and children, causing a yellow tongue. It occurs due to an accumulation of bilirubin, a waste compound, which can lead to a yellowish discoloration of the skin and eyes. When jaundice develops in infants, they may need to undergo phototherapy to treat the condition.

Common Oral Hygiene Ingredients that may Cause Discoloration

It is ironic that certain ingredients found in oral hygiene products can actually lead to discoloration of the tongue and teeth. Some of the culprits responsible for this issue include menthol, alcohol, thymol, witch hazel, and peroxide. Fortunately, switching to different brands of mouthwashes and toothpaste can help eliminate the problem if a yellow tongue is caused by these ingredients. Additionally, individuals who are prone to tongue and teeth discoloration should avoid using mouthwashes and toothpaste that contain dyes.
