Benefits and Side Effects of Topical Corticosteroids
Topical corticosteroids are widely used to treat various skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema, and dermatitis. These medications have proven to be effective in providing relief; however, prolonged and frequent use can lead to certain side effects, including atrophy and stretch marks. It is essential for individuals using topical corticosteroid creams, gels, or ointments to carefully follow the recommended application instructions to minimize the risk of these side effects.
Genetic Disorders
Genetic disorders can increase the likelihood of stretch marks forming on the skin. Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is one such disorder that weakens the skin’s structure, making it more susceptible to developing stretch marks, even at a young age. Another genetic disorder, Marfan’s syndrome, also predisposes individuals to the formation of stretch marks during their youth. Cushing syndrome is yet another genetic disorder that can result in the appearance of stretch marks due to elevated cortisol levels, leading to rapid weight gain. Similarly, certain adrenal disorders can cause an increase in cortisol levels, contributing to the development of stretch marks.
