What Causes That Itchy Throat Feeling?

An itchy throat or the sensation of having a lump or “dust” in the back of the throat is a prevalent occurrence. While typically temporary and benign, these symptoms can be incredibly bothersome. Furthermore, they sometimes coincide with or precede more severe health conditions.

Allergies: The Culprits Behind an Itchy Throat

When the warmer months roll around, allergies can wreak havoc on our respiratory systems, often leading to an itchy throat. Dust, pollen, mold, pet dander, and mites are just a few of the common culprits that trigger allergic reactions in many individuals. These reactions typically manifest as throat irritation, accompanied by a runny or congested nose and red, watery eyes. In some cases, a dry cough may also develop as a result.

Understanding Pharyngitis

Pharyngitis is a condition characterized by inflammation of the pharynx, which is the section of the throat located just above the larynx. It occurs when bacteria enter the body through tiny particles in the air, leading to an infection in the pharynx. Although pharyngitis is typically not a severe or long-lasting condition, it can cause discomfort and other mild symptoms that affect the throat.
