What Causes High Bilirubin Levels?
There are various factors that can lead to elevated bilirubin levels in the body. Consuming excessive amounts of alcohol is one such factor that can cause an increase in bilirubin levels. Additionally, certain illnesses that are triggered by the hepatitis virus can also have a similar effect.
Conditions such as pancreatic cancer and malignant tumors in the gallbladder can contribute to higher levels of bilirubin. This is because these conditions disrupt the normal functioning of the organs, leading to an abnormal increase in bilirubin levels.
Another common cause of elevated bilirubin levels is the presence of gallstones. These stones can block the bile ducts, preventing the normal flow of bile and resulting in an accumulation of bilirubin in the body.
In some cases, excessive destruction of red blood cells, known as hemolysis, can also lead to increased levels of bilirubin in the blood. Additionally, the presence of liver tumors can contribute to higher levels of this waste product in the bloodstream.
Testing Bilirubin Levels
Assessing bilirubin levels can be done through a blood test known as the ‘Van Den Bergh Reaction Test’. This test involves treating blood from the patient to separate the red blood cells from the serum or fluid. By diluting the serum and combining it with a special chemical, the test can determine the amount of waste product accumulated in the blood.
If the results of the test indicate high levels of bilirubin, a medical professional will review all the serum tests to confirm the findings and identify any liver damage. Additional examinations may include a physical evaluation to check for an enlarged or tender liver, as well as imaging tests like ultrasound or a CT scan to visualize the liver. An endoscopy might also be performed to examine the ducts through which bile travels in the digestive system, searching for any obstructions. In rare instances, a liver biopsy may be required, where a small piece of the organ is examined under a microscope by a doctor.
