During the delivery process, various medications can be administered to alleviate pain and ensure a smooth experience. In addition to pain relief, there are several other important procedures that take place after the baby is born.
One of the assessments performed on the newborn is called the Apgar test, which evaluates the baby’s breathing, muscle tone, color, reflex response, and heart rate. This test provides crucial information about the overall health of the newborn.
If the mother had an episiotomy or experienced severe tearing during delivery, the physician will suture the perineum and also check for any vaginal blood loss. It is essential to address any discomfort or complications that may arise during this time.
Furthermore, a member of the birthing team will examine the firmness of the top of the uterus to ensure there is no hemorrhage. This is a precautionary measure taken to prevent any potential complications.
In the case of a C-section delivery, the physician will close the incision after the baby is safely delivered. Once the baby is born, they are immediately placed on the mother’s chest for skin-to-skin contact, promoting bonding between the mother and the newborn.
