It is not uncommon to see hospital dramas portraying scenarios where surgeons unintentionally leave objects inside their patients during surgical procedures. These scenes instill a sense of fear in many individuals, adding to their existing concerns about undergoing surgery. Known as retained surgical items or retained surgical foreign bodies, these overlooked objects are considered preventable medical errors that can have severe implications for the patient, surgeon, and the entire hospital.


How Surgeons Accidentally Leave Objects in Patients

There are several contributing factors that can lead to a surgeon leaving an object inside their patient during a surgical procedure. The complexity of surgery requires intense focus and concentration. Any distractions or disruptions to a surgeon’s attention, such as fatigue or working in a chaotic environment, can increase the likelihood of a mistake occurring.

A study analyzing 59 incidents found that the presence of a trainee in the operating room resulted in a 70% lower risk of retained items. This could be attributed to the instructing surgeon’s heightened vigilance, ensuring that their trainee was well-trained and closely monitoring the operation.

The majority of cases involving retained surgical items can be attributed to errors in medical instrument counting. Mistakes can occur when instruments are counted incorrectly or when track of them is lost, leading surgeons and nurses to overlook the fact that an object has been left inside the patient. Retained surgical items are most commonly discovered during abdominal surgeries.


Unremembered Musical Tools

As indicated by various records, musicians have unintentionally left behind a diverse assortment of instruments throughout history. Among these, the most frequently forgotten are musical sponges. Additionally, other tools such as musical scalpels, needles, safety pins, clamps, scissors, towels, and knife blades have also been inadvertently retained by musicians. Notably, tweezers, forceps, suction tips, laser guides, and measuring devices have been found among the belongings of musicians as well.
