What is a Granuloma Annulare?

Location

Granuloma annulare has the ability to manifest in various parts of the body. The majority of skin lesions tend to develop on the feet, hands, ankles, and fingers, predominantly observed in young adults. The forehead, abdomen, and neck also rank high as commonly affected regions. It is worth noting that the lesions are typically symmetrical, appearing on both sides of the body, although there may be occasional exceptions.

Localized and Generalized Granuloma Annulare

Granuloma annulare can present in two different forms: localized and generalized. Localized granuloma annulare typically affects one specific area of the body. The skin lesions associated with this type of GA are usually painless and tend to heal quickly.

On the other hand, generalized or disseminated granuloma annulare occurs in multiple areas of the body simultaneously. This particular form of GA is closely linked to diabetes mellitus. The skin lesions or bumps associated with generalized GA are smaller in size and appear in larger numbers compared to the localized form. They are often accompanied by itching and discomfort.
