What Sets a Low-Residue Diet Apart from a Low Fiber Diet?

When it comes to dietary restrictions, a low-residue diet and a low-fiber diet may seem similar at first glance. However, there are notable differences between the two. Although both diets involve reducing the consumption of fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and whole grains, a low-residue diet encompasses additional limitations that extend beyond simply reducing fiber intake.

In general, low-fiber diets recommend a daily fiber intake ranging from 5 to 15 grams. Conversely, a low-residue diet takes things a step further by excluding foods such as prune juice, leafy vegetables, bran cereals, and popcorn. Additionally, dairy consumption is also restricted to some extent on a low-residue diet.


Understanding the Low-Residue Diet

The low-residue diet is designed to minimize the frequency and intensity of bowel movements by consuming specific types of food. Although high fiber is generally considered beneficial for digestion, it can lead to increased bowel movements. By following this diet, individuals with digestive issues can experience relief from discomfort and pain. For instance, patients with Crohn’s disease may find that reducing the number of bowel movements helps alleviate their symptoms.
