What Happens During the Procedure?
When undergoing a sigmoidoscopy, patients are required to wear a hospital gown and position themselves on their left side on the examination table with their knees drawn towards their abdomen. To begin the procedure, the doctor inserts a sigmoidoscope into the rectum and guides it into the sigmoid colon. The entire process generally lasts between 15 to 30 minutes; however, it may take longer if the doctor needs to perform biopsies or additional examinations.
What to Expect After a Sigmoidoscopy
Recovering from a sigmoidoscopy is typically a swift process. Following the procedure, it is recommended for patients to rest for a few minutes before standing up from the examination table. Unless advised otherwise by the doctor, individuals can return to their regular diet and activities. It is common to experience increased flatulence after a sigmoidoscopy due to the introduction of air into the intestines during the procedure.
