What Is Acute Renal Colic?

Complications of Untreated Kidney Stones and Renal Colic

When kidney stones and renal colic are left untreated, they can lead to various complications. The obstruction caused by these conditions can result in irritation and inflammation, causing urine to back up into the kidney. This backup of urine can eventually lead to a loss of renal function if the ureter or any part of the urinary tract is completely obstructed.

In addition to the obstruction, untreated kidney stones and renal colic also pose a risk of infection. The presence of an obstruction in the urinary tract can create an environment where bacteria can thrive, leading to urinary tract infections. If left untreated, these infections can become severe and even life-threatening.

Follow-up and Prognosis

After undergoing renal colic, it is important for individuals to undergo a follow-up evaluation within one to two weeks to assess their risk of developing another obstruction. Approximately six weeks later, doctors may conduct blood and urine tests to identify the underlying cause of the stones and offer recommendations on preventive measures. However, it is worth noting that up to 50 percent of individuals who have experienced a kidney stone episode are likely to encounter another occurrence within a decade.
