Cause: Peripheral Neuropathy
Peripheral neuropathy is a condition that occurs when the nerves connecting the body to the spinal cord and brain are damaged or destroyed. This condition commonly leads to weakness, pain, and numbness, primarily in the hands and feet, although it can also affect other parts of the body. Individuals with peripheral neuropathy often describe their pain as burning, tingling, or stabbing.
Cause: Diabetes
Diabetes can lead to the development of allodynia due to the long-term damage it causes to nerves. The nervous system relies on nerve growth factor (NGF) for its proper functioning. Experts have hypothesized that diabetes can reduce NGF levels, which in turn can result in diabetic nerve damage. This damage increases the likelihood of experiencing allodynia.
