What is an ESR Test?

How long does it take to get the results of an ESR test?

Getting the results of an ESR test typically does not require a lengthy wait. However, the duration may vary depending on the laboratory conducting the test. In most cases, the results are available on the same day. Nonetheless, if the laboratory sends the sample to a reference laboratory, you might have to wait a few days to receive the results.

With traditional ESR tests, technicians can read the results approximately one hour after the test has commenced. On the other hand, more advanced techniques can provide faster results. For instance, the latest centrifugal methods can deliver results in as little as five minutes.

Understanding Abnormal ESR Results

When you receive abnormal ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate) results, it does not necessarily mean that you have a specific disease. Instead, it indicates the presence of inflammation in your body. Various factors, such as age and medications, can influence ESR results.

However, it is important to note that abnormal ESR readings alone are insufficient for a doctor to provide a definitive diagnosis. They serve as an initial indication for further investigation through additional tests. If your ESR results are either higher or lower than the normal range, your doctor will likely recommend further tests as a follow-up.
