What is Ankyloglossia?

Understanding the Outlook for Ankyloglossia

Recovery from a frenotomy procedure typically takes several days to a week. It is common for a temporary white patch to form, but rest assured, it usually disappears within one to two weeks. Fortunately, the chances of ankyloglossia recurring are quite low, as the tissue typically does not regenerate. Additionally, encouraging children to regularly exercise their tongues can help prevent potential issues in the future.

Ankyloglossia and Breastfeeding

Difficulties with breastfeeding are common among infants with ankyloglossia. While bottle feeding usually poses no problems, nursing can be challenging for both the mother and the baby. Mothers may experience nipple pain as they try to feed their baby with ankyloglossia, and the babies may struggle to latch onto the breast. Furthermore, these infants may appear hungry, not gain weight properly, or even vomit after feeding. Additionally, they may produce clicking sounds or grind their gums while nursing.
