What is Bilirubin?

Treatment Options for Kernicterus

When it comes to treating kernicterus, one of the standard methods used is light therapy. This treatment involves exposing newborn babies to either natural or artificial light sources for specific durations. By increasing their exposure to light sources, the body is stimulated to convert bilirubin into a water-soluble form, which enables the compound to be eliminated from the body.

Gilbert’s Syndrome

Gilbert’s syndrome is a genetic disorder that is passed down through generations. It is estimated that about 5 to 10 percent of the population is affected by this condition. This syndrome is characterized by lower enzyme activity, which impairs the liver’s ability to efficiently remove bilirubin from the blood. However, in most cases, mildly elevated levels of unconjugated bilirubin in adults are not considered harmful. Individuals with Gilbert’s syndrome often experience episodes of jaundice triggered by various factors, including dehydration, prolonged fasting, stress, lack of sleep, and menstruation.
