While the spinal cord terminates in the upper part of the lumbar spine, the cauda equina carries on, providing crucial sensory and motor function to the lower body. In fact, its name, derived from Latin, translates to “horse’s tail” due to its visual similarity to the tail of a horse.
Causes of Cauda Equina Syndrome
Cauda equina syndrome can be caused by a variety of factors, including compression, trauma, or damage to the bundle of nerves known as the cauda equina. However, the most common cause of this condition is a herniated disk in the lumbar region of the spine. In addition to a herniated disk, there are other possible causes that can lead to cauda equina syndrome.
