Chikungunya Virus: Global Distribution
The Chikungunya virus is found in various regions worldwide, spanning Africa, Asia, North America, South America, and Europe. Additionally, it can be found in islands located in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, as well as the Caribbean Sea. Noteworthy countries that have experienced previous chikungunya epidemics include Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Sudan, Philippines, Maldives, Laos, Singapore, Thailand, Tanzania, Seychelles, Kenya, Guinea, and Vietnam. Although cases have been reported in the Americas and Europe, outbreaks have not reached epidemic levels.
Transmission of the Chikungunya Virus
The chikungunya virus is primarily transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes. When these insects bite a person who is already infected, they become carriers of the virus, which they then transmit to other individuals through subsequent bites. Additionally, there have been rare instances where a mother passes the virus to her newborn during childbirth. Although medical researchers have theorized that blood transfusions could potentially transmit the virus, no confirmed cases have been reported to substantiate this hypothesis.
