What is Chimerism?

Unique Effects of Tetragametic Chimerism

Individuals with tetragametic chimerism experience fascinating transformations within their bodies. One intriguing phenomenon is the presence of varying sets of chromosomes in different organs. For instance, a person may have one set of chromosomes in their liver, while a completely different set exists in their kidneys. Another remarkable characteristic observed in some chimeras is the development of distinctive Blaschko’s lines beneath their skin. Although these lines are typically invisible, they become visible when exposed to a specific spectrum of ultraviolet (UV) light. In certain cases, these lines even form an arrow shape, pointing downwards from the shoulders.
