What is Claudication?

Treatment Options

Claudication can be treated through a variety of methods, depending on the severity of the condition. One common approach is the use of medications, which may include blood thinners to prevent the formation of blood clots. Additionally, medications to improve blood flow and cholesterol-lowering drugs may be prescribed if tests indicate a hardening of the arteries.

In cases where the condition is more severe, a doctor may recommend angioplasty. This procedure involves inserting a tube into the affected artery and using a special balloon to widen it. To ensure the artery remains open and promotes better blood flow, a stent may be fitted during the surgery.

Surgical Treatment for Arterial Hardening

In cases where arterial hardening is severe, surgical intervention may be recommended by a healthcare professional. The objective of this procedure is to restore normal blood flow to the affected muscle and alleviate the pain associated with claudication. Vascular surgery is performed in such cases, involving the replacement of the blocked or hardened artery with a healthy artery sourced from another part of the body.
