Studies have revealed that individuals who are exposed to violence, neglect, poverty, or abuse on a regular basis are at a higher risk of developing depression during their lifetime. As social beings, humans require a conducive and nurturing environment to maintain their mental well-being.


Symptoms of Depression: More than just sadness

Depression is often associated with feelings of sadness, but its symptoms go beyond just this emotion. Individuals who are depressed may also experience various health issues that can both contribute to and worsen the condition. These can include fatigue, sleep disorders, loss of appetite, and fluctuations in weight.

Mentally, those with depression may struggle with low self-esteem, anxiety, restlessness, confusion, and indecisiveness. In some cases, they may even entertain thoughts of self-harm. If an individual consistently exhibits an uncharacteristic low mood and displays any of these symptoms, they could be experiencing depression.

It’s important to note that people cope with depression in different ways, and some may appear to function relatively well in their daily lives. However, it is crucial to understand that this does not undermine the severity of their condition.
