Gallbladder
The gallbladder plays a crucial role in the digestion process, even though food never directly enters it. Positioned beneath the liver, this pear-shaped organ functions as a storage unit for the bile produced by the liver. When we consume food, the gallbladder contracts and releases bile into the small intestine to aid in the digestion process. After the food has been completely broken down into liquid form, it moves through the small intestine and eventually reaches the colon or large intestine.
Understanding the Colon (also known as the Large Intestine)
The colon, also referred to as the large intestine, is a muscular tube that spans about five to six feet in length. Its primary function is to connect the cecum, which serves as the entrance to the large intestine, to the rectum. Within this crucial organ, waste material that remains after the digestion process undergoes a transformation to become a substance that can be expelled by the body. The colon facilitates this process through rhythmic contractions that propel the liquid remnants from earlier stages of digestion along its length, gradually converting them into a more solid state known as stool.
