Recognizing the Early Signs
Identifying the initial symptoms of FX usually occurs during the ages of five to 15. However, it is worth noting that about 15% of individuals with FX may not exhibit any symptoms until they reach the age of 25 or older. One of the earliest and most prominent neurological symptoms is gait ataxia, characterized by problems with balance and walking. Additionally, individuals may experience speech difficulties, such as slow or slurred speech. Over time, speech patterns may become hesitant, with frequent pauses and interruptions.
Common Signs and Symptoms of FA
Friedreich’s Ataxia (FA) is a condition that manifests itself differently in each individual. While not all symptoms may be present in a person with FA, there are several common signs to look out for. These include:
- Hearing loss
- Deteriorating vision
- Lack of reflexes in the legs
- Involuntary eye movements
- Poor concentration
- Progressive muscle deterioration leading to skeletal problems
- Heart problems (experienced by approximately 75% of people with FA)
It’s important to note that while these symptoms are commonly associated with FA, the severity and progression of the condition can vary greatly between individuals.
