Causes of Kidney Dysplasia
Kidney dysplasia, a condition characterized by abnormal kidney development, can have various causes. While some cases are associated with certain medications and recreational drugs taken during pregnancy, there is limited evidence to establish a direct causal relationship. It is important for pregnant women to consult their healthcare providers to discuss the potential benefits, risks, and alternative treatment options related to these substances. Genetic conditions are often responsible for many cases of kidney dysplasia, while a significant percentage of diagnosed cases remain idiopathic, meaning the exact cause cannot be identified.
Diagnosis
Kidney dysplasia can be diagnosed during pregnancy through a fetal ultrasound or sonogram. Routine ultrasounds allow doctors to identify abnormalities, including kidney dysplasia, either by chance or by specifically looking for it based on genetic factors. This imaging technique enables doctors to detect potential structural defects. After the baby is born, an ultrasound can also be used to confirm a diagnosis. If a doctor feels a mass in the baby’s side due to an enlarged kidney, an ultrasound is typically conducted immediately after birth. In older infants or children, diagnosis often occurs after recurrent urinary tract infections or in the presence of other medical conditions.
