Comorbid Conditions
People who suffer from maladaptive daydreaming often have other mental health conditions, including obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, or ADHD. Studies also indicate that individuals with maladaptive daydreaming are more prone to dissociation-related symptoms compared to those who do not experience such symptoms.
Classification of Maladaptive Daydreaming
The classification of maladaptive daydreaming poses a challenge for clinicians and researchers as it is not officially recognized as a mental health condition in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). Although it exhibits similarities to dissociation disorders, attention deficit conditions, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and behavioral addiction, it does not neatly fit into any of these categories in terms of treatment.
