What is Motor Neuron Disease?

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a prevalent motor neuron disease that primarily affects the muscles. Typically, the initial signs of ALS manifest as weakness in the limbs or trouble with hand movements. Additionally, unexplained muscle spasms or twitches may occur, indicating the deterioration of the muscles in the affected area. Sadly, the average life expectancy for individuals with ALS ranges from two to five years after the onset of symptoms.

Understanding Progressive Bulbar Palsy (PBP)

Progressive Bulbar Palsy (PBP), also referred to as bulbar onset MND, is a condition that primarily targets the facial muscles, including the tongue and throat. It manifests with early symptoms such as slurred speech and difficulties in swallowing. Unfortunately, individuals with PBP often face a shorter life expectancy compared to those diagnosed with ALS, ranging from six months to three years.
