Moyamoya Disease Complications
Moyamoya disease can lead to various complications, most of which are associated with stroke. One common complication is vision disturbances, which can occur in individuals who have had a stroke. While relatively uncommon, some people with Moyamoya disease may also experience involuntary muscle movements.
In children, strokes caused by Moyamoya disease can result in difficulties with mental processing, making schoolwork challenging. These children may also face emotional difficulties and may develop low self-esteem due to their struggles with mental processing.
Adults who experience a stroke as a result of Moyamoya disease may encounter problems with memory and cognitive functions. Additionally, seizures, speech disturbances, and weakness can develop as complications of the disease.
Understanding the Causes of Moyamoya Disease
Moyamoya disease, although not fully understood, is believed to have multiple potential causes, including genetic factors and injury. Researchers have noted a higher prevalence of the disease in Japan, China, and Korea, suggesting a possible genetic link. Additionally, Moyamoya disease has been found to be associated with certain medical conditions such as neurofibromatosis type 1, Down syndrome, hyperthyroidism, and sickle cell anemia. It is important to note that the condition may also develop as a result of various medical procedures, including chemotherapy, heart or skull x-rays, and surgical interventions.
