Causes of Pilonidal Sinus (PNS)
Pilonidal sinus, a small hole or tunnel in the skin, is often caused by a buildup of hair, dirt, or debris. Although this process may resemble acne, the distinction lies in the fact that acne comes to the surface, whereas pilonidal cysts do not. If left untreated, the cyst can progressively enlarge as it accumulates more hair, debris, and dirt. Eventually, this can result in the formation of a large cyst or abscess, which can be accompanied by pain and swelling.
Untreated Pilonidal Sinus: Risks and Symptoms
When pilonidal sinus disease is left untreated, the cysts can grow rapidly and become easily infected, causing pain and the spread of infection. If the abscess or cyst becomes large enough, it may release blood and pus, resulting in a foul odor.
