The Impact of Modern Technology on Sleep

Modern technology, such as mobile phones, TVs, and tablets, has had a significant impact on our sleep patterns. One particular aspect is the blue light emitted by these devices, which mimics the blue color we see in the sky during the daytime.

Our bodies have evolved to be awake and alert during the day, and as a response to the blue-ish light, our brains release the hormone cortisol. Cortisol helps wake up the brain, making us more alert and active. However, this can become problematic when we engage with screens before bed.

When we look at screens, whether browsing the internet or watching TV, our brain cannot distinguish between the natural blue light of daylight and the artificial blue light emitted by the devices. This can lead to an increase in cortisol levels and a reduction in the effectiveness of the sleep hormone melatonin on our brain.

As a consequence, looking at screens up to an hour before bedtime can disrupt our sleep patterns, making it harder for us to fall asleep or experience lower-quality sleep. This, in turn, leaves us feeling tired and fatigued the next day.


The Significance of Sleep Hygiene

Sleep hygiene refers to the adoption of beneficial practices that enhance the quality of sleep. In today’s fast-paced society, the combination of excessive stress and the prevalent use of electronic devices prior to bedtime has led to a higher number of individuals waking up feeling fatigued. This can be attributed to the disruption of their natural circadian rhythms caused by the unnatural sequence of modern life. Additionally, individuals who work indoors with limited exposure to natural light may find their bodies deceived into perceiving it as nighttime. Prolonged exposure to these circumstances can result in circadian rhythm disorders and exacerbate other health problems.
