What is the Pharynx

Disorders and Infections

Sore throats can be caused by various factors, including viral or strep bacteria infections. Allergies and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) are also potential causes. Tonsillitis, although a minor issue, can cause discomfort for a few days before symptoms disappear. On the other hand, laryngitis, characterized by swelling of the voice box, typically does not require treatment. However, dysphagia is a more serious disorder that can lead to difficulties with eating and swallowing. Additionally, although less common, oropharyngeal tumors are still a possibility.

Cancers Linked to the Pharynx

According to the National Cancer Institute, an estimated 50,000 individuals will receive a diagnosis of oral cavity and pharynx cancer in 2018. These types of cancers account for approximately three percent of all cancer cases and predominantly affect men. The primary risk factors associated with these cancers are alcohol and tobacco use, with individuals who regularly indulge in both substances facing a higher likelihood of diagnosis compared to others.
