What is TSH?

The Role of TSH in the Body

From there, it travels to the thyroid gland, where it stimulates the production and release of other important thyroid hormones such as thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). These hormones, in turn, have a direct impact on the production of TSH.

When the levels of T4 and T3 in the body increase, the hypothalamus, a part of the brain, detects this and signals the pituitary gland to reduce the production of thyrotropin-releasing hormone. This decrease in thyrotropin-releasing hormone then instructs the pituitary gland to produce less TSH, thus maintaining a balance of all these hormones at normal levels.

When it comes to assessing thyroid function, TSH tests are a common and convenient option. These tests involve a simple blood test that takes less than five minutes to complete. Not only is the procedure almost painless, but the results can be analyzed quickly as well.

A normal TSH level typically falls within the range of .04 to 4.0 milli-international units per liter. However, it’s important to note that certain medications can potentially impact these results. Therefore, individuals undergoing the test should inform their doctor about all the medications and supplements they are currently taking prior to the test.
