Development of Motor Skills in Infants
During a comprehensive examination, doctors assess the motor skills of infants and often seek additional information from parents. While the nervous system of newborns is still developing, they possess a remarkable range of motor abilities within the first month of life. For instance, babies are born with reflexes such as sucking and can immediately latch onto the breast for feeding. Another reflex is observed when a parent places a finger inside the baby’s palm, causing the baby to instinctively close their fist around it. Additionally, infants exhibit the Moro reflex, wherein they respond to sudden stimuli by extending their arms and legs, followed by bringing them back in.
Understanding Baby Communication
When it comes to communication, newborn babies primarily express their needs through crying. Whether they are hungry, have a wet diaper, or need to sleep, crying is their way of communicating. As parents spend time with their baby, they quickly learn to distinguish between different types of cries and understand what actions or items can provide comfort. For instance, gentle rocking, swaddling, or a light massage can help soothe the baby.
During the one-month check-up, the doctor will inquire about any unusual crying patterns. Excessive crying may necessitate a medical evaluation to rule out conditions such as colic or other potential concerns.
